Chapter Ten
Kurt knew Elizabeth had not encouraged Grant Lewis. That was the only reason he’d rescued her.
Before the services had ended, he’d sent the others outside, then secreted himself in one of the empty Bible study rooms. Leaving the door slightly ajar, he’d watched her bounce exuberantly down the aisle, ignoring Lewis completely.
Her behavior had given credence to her amnesia claim. And whether it was logical or not, he had believed her.
In fact, she hadn’t even acknowledged Lewis until he’d approached her. Kurt had intently studied her face, saw no flicker of recognition when Lewis had greeted her, and she’d seemed genuinely alarmed when the man kissed her.
Kurt gritted his teeth. The old jealousy wound around his gut like a venomous snake. Her betrayal had cut him to the quick, but how could he hold it against her now when she didn’t even remember the episode?
In his mind, he saw it all again. Elizabeth, his fiancée, and Grant, his business partner, locked in the throes of lovemaking right in the middle of his bed. And the awful thing was when he’d confronted them, Elizabeth had laughed in his face. How could he have been so blind to the true nature of both his business partner and his fiancée?
A heated flush ran up his neck.
“Kurt?”
He stopped outside the church, his gaze scanning the grounds for Hub. From behind him, Beth touched his shoulder.
Kurt turned to face her. Right now, he wanted to be anywhere but here, dealing with this.
“I’m so sorry,” she whispered.
“You did nothing wrong.”
“This time. I’m apologizing for the past. I can’t believe I, er, did anything with that person.”
“I’m sorry he bothered you.”
“How could I have been with a man like that?”
“Better question, how could I have been in business with him?”
“Don’t blame yourself. We were at fault. Not you.”
He nodded, not knowing what else to say. A gentle breeze blew, lifting her pink sundress around her legs. God, she was more beautiful than ever. The sun beat down. Perspiration gathered along his collar.
“Help me, Kurt,” she whispered.
“How?”
“Help me get my memory back.”
“Are you sure that’s what you want?”
Beth nodded. “You don’t know how completely frustrating it is not to remember anything. I feel so vulnerable.”
“You might not like what you discover,” he said.
“I don’t imagine I will, but I’ve got to know. I have to find out why I can play the piano, why I have memories of an aunt you say doesn’t exist. Will you help me?”
He hesitated.
“It’ll be painful for us both, but I can’t do it alone.” She reached out and took his hand, giving it a squeeze. “Please.”
“Yeah, okay.” Lord, he could refuse her nothing. “Tomorrow we’ll go see Dr. Freely again.”
“Promise?” Her blue eyes pleaded with him for understanding.
“I promise,” Kurt uttered the words, wondering what in the world he’d committed himself to uncover.
